چکیده

Several approaches have been proposed for the computation of solutions to the phase and chemical equilibrium problem when the problem is posed as the minimization of the Gibbs free energy function. None of them can guarantee convergence to the true optimal solution, and are highly dependent on the supplied initial point. Convergence to local solutions often occurs, yielding incorrect phase and component distributions. This work examines the problem when the liquid phase is adequately modeled by the Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL) activity coeecient expression and the vapor phase is assumed to be ideal. The contribution of the proposed approach is twofold. Firstly, a novel and important property of the Gibbs free energy expression involving the NRTL equation is provided. It is subsequently shown that by introducing new variables, the problem can then be transformed into one where a biconvex objective function is minimized over a set of bilinear constraints.) is used to exploit these induced properties of the formulation to guarantee convergence to an-global solution, regardless of the starting point. A geometrical interpretation is provided for a selected smaller, but challenging, example. Numerous examples are presented which demonstrate the broad applicability of the proposed approach.

Decomposition based and branch and bound global optimization approaches for the phase equilibrium problem

An increasingly popular approach when solving the phase and chemical equilibrium problem is to pose it as an optimization problem. However, diiculties are encountered due to the highly nonlinear nature of the models used to represent the behavior of the uids, and because of the existence of multiple local solutions. This work shows how it is possible to guarantee-global solutions for a certain ...

Hybridization of Cuckoo Search and Firefly Algorithms to Calculate the Interaction Parameters in Phase Equilibrium Modeling Problems

Liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) problems such as phase stability analysis, phase equilibrium calculations, chemical equilibrium calculations, binary interaction parameter identification of thermodynamic models and other problems of fluid characterization have been the core subject of many recent studies. This study introduces Cuckoo Search (CS), Firefly Algorithms (FA) and its variants as p...

Modeling of liquid–liquid equilibria of aqueous alcohol + salt systems using amodified NRTL

The modified NRTL (m-NRTL) model is used to represent the excess Gibbs free energy of aqueous (alcohol + electrolyte) solutions. In this work, the m-NRTL model previously developed for representation of vapor-liquid equilibria for (polymer + salt + water) systems has been extended to represent liquid-liquid equilibria of (alcohol + salt + water) systems. The proposed extension is a modified of ...

Global Optimization for the Phase Stability Problem

The Gibbs tangent plane criterion has become an important tool in determining the quality of obtained solutions to the phase and chemical equilibrium problem. The ability to determine if a postulated solution is thermodynamically stable with respect to perturbations in any or all of the phases is very useful in the search for the true equilibrium solution. Previous approaches have concentrated ...

Application of the Genetic Algorithm to Calculate the Interaction Parameters for Multiphase and Multicomponent Systems

A method based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) was developed to study the phase behavior of multicomponent and multiphase systems. Upon application of the GA to the thermodynamic models which are commonly used to study the VLE, VLLE and LLE phase equilibria, the physically meaningful values for the Binary Interaction Parameters (BIP) of the models were obtained. Using the method proposed in t...
